Machines and materials are one system. Most “machine problems” in the first production month are really material conversations that never happened.
Send real materials before the machine is built
Film stiffness, carton board grade, label liner thickness — machines are tuned to what arrives in the crate samples. If procurement changes supplier after the acceptance test, retest with the new material before committing a production run to it.
Films: sealing window beats price per kilo
A film with a wide sealing temperature window forgives speed changes and jaw wear; a narrow-window film turns every ambient shift into a seal-quality complaint. Ask the film supplier for the sealing curve, not just the gauge, and keep it with the machine recipes.
Cartons: grain direction and storage matter
Board that stores flat and creases along the grain runs clean at speed. Cartons stored in swinging humidity warp, and a warped blank is a magazine misfeed waiting for the busiest shift. Specify storage conditions with the same seriousness as the board grade.
Write material specs into the purchase order
The materials that ran at the FAT define the machine’s contract. Put their specifications — supplier, grade, gauge, tolerances — into your purchasing documents, so a cost-saving substitution upstream never becomes a mystery breakdown downstream.
