Preventive Maintenance That Actually Prevents

Preventive Maintenance That Actually Prevents

Maintenance calendars fill up with tasks that feel diligent but prevent little. A handful of measurements beat a page of checkbox rituals.

Trend, don’t inspect

A single vibration or current reading means little; a trend tells you a bearing is failing weeks before it seizes. Log the same three numbers monthly: vibration, motor current, seal-area temperature.

Watch the duty point drift

Fouling filters and aging pipework move the operating point. A pump that ran at best efficiency on day one may be recirculating today — flow and pressure gauges tell you in seconds.

Keep the right spares, not all spares

One seal kit and one set of wear parts per critical pump family covers most emergencies. Matched-by-serial kits remove the 2 a.m. guessing.

Write down what the machine told you

Every teardown is data. Where did it wear, what did it swallow, how long did it run? Two lines in a log turn the next failure into a planned swap.
