Our Story

We started Cadence & Co. in 2012, in a narrow workshop off a bike lane, because we were tired of shops selling racing machines to people who were only trying to get to work.

A bicycle for the journey you actually make

Almost every trip made by bicycle in a city is under eight kilometres, taken in ordinary clothes, and repeated several times a week. That is a very particular set of demands, and it has almost nothing in common with a weekend in the mountains. It wants an upright position so you can see and be seen. It wants gears that shift while stationary at a red light. It wants guards, because it will rain. It wants a chaincase, because you will be wearing something you cannot easily wash.

Everything we make starts from those constraints rather than from a catalogue of components.

Built here, tuned here

Frames are brazed by a small workshop we have used since the beginning, then finished, built and road-tested in our own space in Brooklyn. Every complete bicycle is ridden by a mechanic before it is boxed. It is a slow way to work, and it is the reason we make a handful of models rather than forty.

Parts you can replace

We use standard sizes and open standards throughout — threaded bottom brackets, common seatpost diameters, spokes you can buy anywhere. A Cadence bicycle should be serviceable in ten years by a mechanic who has never seen one, in a town we have never heard of. Nothing proprietary, nothing disposable.

The workshop is open

You are welcome to visit. There is usually coffee, always a stand free, and someone who will happily set your saddle height properly whether or not you bought the bicycle from us.

Cadence & Co. is a demonstration storefront. All contact details, prices and stock are fictional.
