Most reels die of neglect, not fish. A ten-minute ritual after each trip keeps a good reel smooth for a decade.
Rinse gently, never soak
A soft spray of fresh water lifts salt and grit off the outside. Dunking a reel drives both into the gears – the opposite of cleaning.
Back the drag off
Storing a reel with the drag cranked compresses the washers into memory foam that has lost the memory. Back it off after every trip and the drag starts smooth for years.
One drop of oil, twice a season
Handle knobs and bail joints want one drop of light reel oil – not the whole bottle, not motor oil. Grease belongs on gears and only during a proper service.
Listen for the warning
A new click, grind or wobble is a bearing asking politely. Parts cost little now and a lot mid-fight – our spares desk can match any current model from a photo.
