The Halden is the table the workshop was built around. The top is five boards of quarter-sawn white oak, laid so the ray fleck runs in the same direction across the whole width, and hand-planed rather than sanded so it takes light in bands rather than flatly. Two leaves live inside the frame and lift out on a wooden slide with no metal mechanism to seize up. The apron is joined to the legs with haunched mortise and tenon; the top is held on with ten wooden buttons that let it move a full 8 mm across its width between a wet August and a dry January. It is finished in hardwax oil, which means it can be repaired in place with a cloth rather than sent back to be stripped.
