This is the towel the rest of the range is built around. 500 GSM is the point where a towel has enough pile to dry an adult in one go, without holding so much water that it is still damp the following evening. Anything heavier is a decision about how a towel feels in the hand, not about how well it works.
Why 500 GSM
Grams per square metre measures how much yarn is in the pile. Below about 400 GSM a towel starts to feel thin and pushes water around instead of taking it up. Above about 700 it holds so much water that a small, unheated bathroom cannot dry it in a day, and a towel that never fully dries is the one that starts to smell. 500 sits in the middle on purpose.
The construction
Long-staple cotton spun at a low twist, woven as a double-sided terry pile with a plain dobby border. The low twist lets the loops open up in the wash rather than staying tight and flat, which is why this towel absorbs more after three washes than it does out of the packet.
What to expect
It will shed a little lint in the first two or three washes. That is the cut ends of the pile clearing themselves and it stops. It will also shrink, mostly in length, in the first wash. The 70 x 140 cm on this page is the size after that has happened.
