Linen is sold on a promise of softness that new linen cannot keep. Straight off the loom it is stiff and slightly hairy, and it takes a year of washing to become the thing people picture. This set is stonewashed before it is cut, which does most of that year in advance.

Weight

165 gsm. Lighter linens around 120 gsm feel crisp and see-through and wear out at the seams sooner. Heavier ones near 200 gsm take a long time to soften and are hot in summer, which defeats the point of linen. 165 is the middle.

It will crease

Flax fibre does not spring back the way cotton does, so a linen bed looks rumpled within a night. That is the material, not a fault, and it is most of why people like it. If you want a bed that looks pressed, buy percale cotton instead.

What is in the set
