Almost every piece of jewelry that “wore out” was really just never looked after. Plated finishes, brass and pearls all age beautifully with five minutes of attention a month – here is the entire routine.
Last on, first off
Perfume, hairspray and lotion are the quiet enemies of any finish. Make jewelry the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off, and you have already done half the maintenance.
Wipe after wearing
Skin oils dull metal faster than air ever will. A three-second pass with a dry polishing cloth before the piece goes back in its pouch keeps gold-tone warm and silver-tone bright between proper cleans.
The monthly five minutes
Once a month, give chains and settings a gentle going-over with a soft brush, wipe everything with the two-layer cloth, and check clasps and earring backs while you are at it. Dip-free cleanser handles anything the cloth cannot lift – never soak pearls or enamel.
Store like you mean it
Light, air and tangles do the long-term damage. Pieces live longest in their pouches, chains clasped so they cannot knot, pearls away from direct sun. A drawer beats a windowsill; a pouch beats a bowl.
