Keeping Your Play Mat Clean and Flat

Keeping Your Play Mat Clean and Flat

A good mat quietly improves every game played on it – right up until the night someone lands a drink on the weave. Mat care is five minutes of knowing what to do and what never to do. Here is both.

Crumbs tonight, wipe this week

After each night, sweep crumbs off with a dry palm or a soft brush before rolling the mat away – grit rolled inside grinds the weave from within. Once a week or so, wipe the surface with a damp – not wet – cloth in straight passes, and let it air-dry flat or hung over a chair back before it rolls up again.

Spills: blot, never rub

A spill sits on the weave for a few forgiving seconds before it soaks. Blot straight down with a dry cloth, press, lift, repeat – rubbing spreads the drink sideways into clean weave. For sticky drinks, follow with a damp cloth and plain water. The neoprene base is waterproof; it is the surface weave you are protecting.

Flat is a habit, not a hope

Mats remember how they are stored. Roll around a loose core with the weave facing out, never fold – folds become ridges that dice find forever. A mat that has developed a stubborn curl relaxes overnight under a few heavy books, or flat on a table in a warm room.

The three mat sins

Never machine-wash a stitched mat – the agitation frays edges and delaminates the base. Never iron it, even through a towel; the base remembers heat unkindly. And never store it damp, which is how a mat learns to smell like a forgotten gym bag. Avoid those three and a good mat outlasts the table it lies on.
