Choosing between lithium and lead-acid for a multi-shift fleet

The lithium-versus-lead-acid question is usually answered with a battery datasheet. It should be answered with a shift plan.

The real variable is the break pattern

Lithium’s advantage on a multi-shift site is opportunity charging: fifteen minutes on a charger during a scheduled break can return enough energy to finish the shift, which removes the battery change and the spare pack entirely. That advantage only exists if your operation actually has those breaks at predictable times and a charger within walking distance of where trucks stop.

Where lead-acid still wins

On a single-shift operation with an overnight charge window, a lead-acid pack does the job at a lower purchase price and is easier to dispose of through existing channels. If the truck sits still for eight hours anyway, you are paying a premium for a capability you will not use.

Cold store is a separate calculation

Below freezing, lead-acid capacity falls away quickly and charging efficiency drops. Lithium tolerates the cold better but needs pack heating to charge safely, which has to be specified at order rather than retrofitted.

What to check before deciding

Count the actual truck hours per shift, not the shift length. Measure where trucks idle. Confirm the electrical supply at the proposed charger positions. The answer usually becomes obvious once those three numbers exist.
