Steepwell began with a single borrowed gaiwan and the discovery that the vessel changes the tea. The same leaves, brewed in a bowl with a lid and a little attention, tasted like a different afternoon entirely. We started collecting pieces that made brewing better – then commissioning them, then testing them at our own table for seasons before letting them near the catalogue. The shop grew out of the shelf.
What we choose and why
Everything in the catalogue passes the same three tests at our own tea table: it must pour, seal or sit exactly as intended every single day; it must survive a full season of real use in our own kitchens; and it must carry nothing on its surface but the glaze the kiln gave it. Materials are stated plainly on every listing – celadon-glazed stoneware, white porcelain, cast iron, walnut, bamboo – and if a batch crazes, wobbles or drips, it does not ship.

How we work
- Small batches: vessels arrive from small workshops a kiln-load at a time, and every piece is checked at our bench – lids seated, spouts tested over water, feet ground smooth.
- Plain words: capacities, materials and care notes are stated simply on every listing – no ceremony theatre, no promises a teapot cannot keep.
- Less packaging: plain boxes, paper filler and cotton ribbon – packaging you recycle without guilt, protecting vessels that were never meant to be disposable.
