Most accuracy problems are not failures — they are drift, debris and damage nobody looked for. Ten minutes of routine catches nearly all of them.
Start with zero
An empty scale should read zero, return to zero after a load, and hold it. A wandering zero is the earliest warning most scales give — log it before it becomes an argument about a shipment.
Look under and around
Platforms read wrong when anything bridges them to the floor: a wedged pallet strap, packed-in product dust, a hose lying across a corner. Clear the perimeter and the mystery drift often clears with it.
Check level and feet
Scales measure vertically. A platform knocked off level by a forklift reads low, consistently and invisibly. Check the bubble, re-seat the feet, and confirm all four corners touch.
Test with a known weight
A single check weight — even an uncertified but consistent one — turns opinion into data. Same weight, same spot, same time each day; write the number down. Trends spotted this way get fixed on your schedule, not the auditor’s.
Know when to call for calibration
If zero, level and the check weight all behave but readings still disagree with a reference, it is calibration time. Between visits, the daily log is what tells you the interval is right.
