Impasto is a one-room studio working in oil on Belgian linen. Everything shown here was painted in that room, on a stretcher made in that room, and left on the wall until the paint was genuinely dry.
Why this thick
Paint laid on this heavily stops behaving like a stain and starts behaving like an object. It casts its own shadow, so a canvas changes noticeably between morning and evening light, and it refuses to be corrected — a stroke put down badly has to be scraped off rather than painted over. That constraint is the whole point. It forces the colour decision to be made once, while the brush is loaded, instead of being negotiated over three weeks.

Materials
Belgian linen, stretched over pine and sized before it is grounded. Artist-grade oils in six pigments — ultramarine, chrome yellow, rose madder, viridian, raw ochre and titanium white — mixed on glass rather than on a wooden palette, because glass shows the true value of a mix. Brushes are hog bristle; the knife does more of the work than the brush does.
Commissions
A small number of commissions are taken each year, usually for a specific wall and a specific quality of light. If you have something in mind, the contact page is the best place to start — tell me the size, the room, and which of the works here is closest to what you are after.
