The open shelf is deliberate: a nightstand with three closed drawers becomes a drawer of forgotten cables. Here the lower third stays visible, which keeps it honest. The case sides are quarter-sawn so the ray fleck runs vertically down each side and the whole piece stays dimensionally quiet — quarter-sawn oak moves roughly half as much across its width as the same board flat-sawn. Legs are tapered on the two inside faces only, an old trick that makes them read thinner than they are from across the room.
