The doors are faced with narrow vertical battens, each hollowed with a single pass of a moulding plane, then laid up with a consistent 2 mm gap. That gap is not decoration — it is the expansion allowance that lets a 620 mm wide walnut door face behave like forty separate narrow boards rather than one wide one. In flat light the doors read as a dark chocolate plane; in raking afternoon sun they turn into a rank of vertical shadows. Black walnut is the most dimensionally settled timber we work, which is what makes a face this busy possible at all.
