A mitred case has no end grain showing anywhere, which lets the figure run around the corner and continue down the side as though the whole box were cut from one piece. It is also the hardest way to build a case, because a mitre has almost no long-grain glue surface of its own — so each corner is reinforced with three hardwood splines let into saw kerfs from behind. Inside: two adjustable shelves each side, four dovetailed drawers in the centre bank, and a solid walnut back in a floating frame rather than a sheet of ply.
