Sliding doors are the answer for a piece that has to live in a corridor or behind a dining chair, because they take no floor space to open. The Hollis runs four slab doors in a pair of solid oak tracks, waxed rather than fitted with rollers — there is no bearing to fail and no plastic to yellow. Each door is a floating panel in a slim frame so that a 500 mm wide slab of white oak can move seasonally without binding in its groove. Finger grooves are worked into the leading edge of each door with a round-bottomed plane.
