A through-tenon is the most honest joint in the workshop: you can see it, you can see whether it was cut well, and there is nowhere to hide a sloppy shoulder. On the Kestrel each leg passes through a mortise in the 38 mm oak top and is locked with two ash wedges driven across the grain, proud by half a millimetre and planed flush. The top overhangs the frame by 90 mm at each end so a tray can be set down without knocking a knee. At 380 mm high it sits 320 mm below the Brackenmoor seat cushion, which is where a cup wants to be.

The legs pass right through the top and are wedged from above, so the joinery is the only ornament on the piece.
