The headboard is the single largest continuous surface we make, which makes it the best argument for the floating panel. Two book-matched cherry boards are captured in a 9 mm groove with 3 mm of clearance each side and never glued along their width. Across a humid summer that panel grows by nearly 5 mm; a fixed panel of this size would split within two seasons. Cherry is also the timber that rewards patience most — the pale amber it arrives in will be a deep red-brown by year three, and the change is permanent because it is the wood and not a stain.
