Shelf sag is a function of span, thickness and load, and most bookcases lose on all three. The Quill keeps the span at 860 mm, the shelf at 25 mm of solid ash, and joins each one into the case side with a sliding dovetail — a tapered housing that pulls tight as the shelf goes home and mechanically resists being pulled forward. Loaded to capacity with hardbacks, deflection at the centre of the longest shelf stays under 1 mm. The soap finish leaves the ash almost white and can be renewed with soap flakes and water rather than solvent.
Quill Open Bookcase
