The Timberline is built the old way because the old way still carries best: one big waxed-canvas compartment, a lid pocket for the small things, and leather compression straps that cinch a sleeping bag or a tarp underneath.
The frame sheet keeps boxy loads honest, the straps are padded with wool felt, and every buckle is solid brass that will outlive the trail maps in the lid.
