Watches are ruined less by wearing than by waiting – in damp drawers, on sunny windowsills, in piles where bracelets gnaw at crystals. Storing a small collection well costs almost nothing and looks after both the metal and the leather attached to it.
Give every watch its own place
The first rule is separation: one watch per pocket, slot or cradle, so nothing touches. A roll or a lined drawer both work; the pile does not. Bracelets are harder than crystals is a sentence people learn exactly once.
Moisture is the quiet enemy
Damp air corrodes hands and dials from the inside and turns leather musty from the outside. Store watches in a room you actually live in – bedrooms are ideal – rather than basements or bathrooms. A small pouch of silica gel in the watch drawer, refreshed occasionally, flattens the humidity swings that do the slow damage.
Sun fades more than curtains
Direct sunlight fades dials unevenly and dries strap leather to cardboard. The windowsill display, charming as it looks, is the single worst parking spot for a watch. A stand on a shelf out of direct light gives the same pleasure without the bleaching.
Travelling with more than one
In a bag, soft rolls protect watches from each other and hard cases protect them from the bag. Fasten bracelets around the cushion as they would sit on a wrist, face the crowns away from neighbours, and the collection arrives the way it left – which is the entire job description of good storage.
