Timberling began at a garage workbench with one borrowed lathe, an offcut of beech and the discovery that a toy shaped slowly feels nothing like a toy moulded by the million. We wanted playthings that behaved like something someone had actually held: edges rounded twice, colour brushed thin enough to keep the grain, nothing printed, nothing that beeps. So we started cutting.
What we make and choose
Everything in the catalogue passes the same three tests at our bench: it must be cut and finished in small batches we can personally check, survive a full season of daily play in our own testing households, and suggest more games on the last day than the first. Woods are solid beech and maple; colours are thin water-based coats; finishes are designed with child-safe play in mind. If an edge catches a thumbnail or a paint coat hides the grain, it does not ship.
How we work
- Small batches: every run is cut, sanded and colour-checked by the same pair of hands, then logged before it earns the shelf.
- Plain words: materials, finishes and a recommended age range are stated simply on every listing – no certification theatre, no promises wood cannot keep.
- Less packaging: kraft boxes, cotton bags and paper filler – packaging you compost, reuse or recycle, never apologise for.
