The mat wall can be loud. Ignore the marketing and answer four quiet questions — the right mat falls out of the answers.
Where will you practice?
Hard floors want 5–6 mm of cushion; carpet flattens thick mats and suits 3–4 mm. If the mat travels, foldable beats rollable.
Do your palms run dry or damp?
Dry-touch rubber grips best for most hands. If yours run damp, look for open-textured surfaces that grip more, not less, as practice warms up.
How much ground feel do you want?
Thicker is not simply better — balance poses reward a firmer, thinner mat. 6 mm of dense rubber is stable; 6 mm of soft foam is a waterbed.
Will you carry it?
A studio commute changes the answer: a 2.4 kg rubber mat feels luxurious at home and heavy on a bike. Split the difference with a travel mat for transit days.
