Every one-bag packing list dies the night before a trip. What survives is a method – a repeatable order of operations that works for two nights or two weeks. This is the one we teach at the workshop bench.
Lay out, then halve
Set out everything you think you need, then put half the clothes back. Nobody has ever run out of shirts on a five-day trip; everybody has carried six they never wore. The bag should close without persuasion on departure day – you will want that slack coming home.
Cubes are drawers
One cube for shirts, one for smalls, one for cables and chargers. At the hotel the cubes go straight into the drawer or onto the shelf – unpacking takes one movement, and repacking cannot go wrong because everything has an address.
Heavy against the back
Laptop, shoes and toilet kit ride closest to your spine, light clothes fill the outer half. The pack stands taller, swings less and carries kilos lighter than the same load packed backwards.
The airport pocket
Passport, boarding pass, pen and earbuds live in one lid pocket that never holds anything else – through every queue, one zip, no fishing. When the trip ends, the pocket empties into the same drawer at home, ready for the next one.
