Most fit problems come from measuring the wrong spot – or not measuring at all. Two minutes with a soft tape ends the guesswork for good.
Collar: the two-finger rule
Measure where the collar naturally sits, low on the neck. Add enough slack for two flat fingers between tape and fur – snugger and it rubs, looser and it slips over the ears at the worst moment.
Harness: chest first, weight second
Wrap the tape around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Weight ranges on packaging are a rough guide; the chest number is the one that decides the size.
When to choose which
Collars carry tags and suit easy walkers. Harnesses spread the load for pullers, small breeds and anyone whose walks start with fireworks. Many dogs happily use both – collar for the garden, harness for the street.
Growing dogs
Puppies change size monthly. Buy adjustable, check the fit every few weeks, and resist buying ahead – gear that fits now is gear that gets used.
