Product detail
Drive-in racking removes the aisle between bays and replaces it with a lane the truck drives into. Pallets rest on cantilevered rails rather than beams, and a block of six lanes can hold what fourteen bays of selective racking would need the floor for.
What it costs you
Access. A lane is last-in first-out, so every pallet in front of the one you want has to come out first. The system suits a small number of SKUs held in quantity: a single production run, one grade of raw material, one packaging size. It is the wrong answer for a mixed pick face and no amount of density makes up for that.
Getting the clearances right
Most drive-in damage comes from clearance, not from load. The lane needs the pallet width plus a working gap on each side, the entry frame needs the mast and overhead guard to pass, and the floor needs guide rails so the driver is steering against steel rather than against the uprights. We set those figures from the truck on site, including its mast tilt at height.
Rails and frames
Rails are bolted to rail brackets on the upright perforation, so a level can be moved when the pallet changes. Entry frames are heavier than internal frames and take a bolted deflector at floor level, which is the part that gets hit and the part that is designed to be unbolted and replaced.
Cold store use
Drive-in is common in freezers because refrigerated cube is expensive. Where that applies, the frames are supplied hot-dip galvanised rather than powder coated, and the rail brackets are set to the pallet the freezer actually receives.
