Product detail

A mezzanine buys floor area you already pay rent on. The engineering question is not whether the deck will hold the boxes; it is whether the existing slab will hold the column point loads, and that has to be answered before the steel is ordered.

Point loads on an existing slab

Every column concentrates a large part of the floor load into one base plate. We take the column grid, calculate the point load at each foot, and state it on the drawing so the slab can be checked or a spreader plate specified. A mezzanine designed without that number is a slab problem waiting to happen.

Uniform load and deflection

Decks are designed at 350, 500 or 1 000 kg per square metre uniformly distributed, to a deflection limit of span/300. The lower figure suits hand picking and light shelving; the higher figure is for pallet transfer or wheeled equipment on the deck.

Getting stock up there

Deck level is only useful if goods can reach it. A pallet gate, a lift-and-swing barrier or a conveyor opening is designed into the edge protection rather than cut into it later, and the handrail run is set out so the gate closes into a fixed post.

Stairs and escape

Stair width, rise, going and the number of exits follow the local building regulation for the occupied area and the travel distance, which is a site-specific decision and part of the layout we issue.

Fire rating of the underside, sprinkler coverage above and below the deck, and any building consent required for the added floor area are project matters to be confirmed for each site.
