A Ritual for Winding Down

A Ritual for Winding Down

The hour before sleep decides the night. A repeatable evening ritual — same cues, same order — teaches the body to power down on schedule, and scent is the fastest cue there is.

Set a scent boundary

Keep one fragrance exclusively for the last hour of the day. Light it only then. Within a couple of weeks the first note alone starts the wind-down.

Dim twice

Overheads off at the ritual’s start, lamps off twenty minutes later, leaving only the candle. The staged dimming mirrors dusk and cues melatonin far better than one abrupt lights-out.

Give the hands a task

Tea, a page or two, the balm-on-hands routine — small physical tasks keep the phone out of reach without requiring willpower.

End it deliberately

Snuff the candle — the closing act of the ritual. The small ceremony of it is the point: the day is now over, on your terms.
