Daily Care for Diamond Edging Wheels

Diamond wheels are the most consumed precision component in a glass shop, and the gap between a six-month wheel and a two-month wheel is mostly daily habit. These routines pay for themselves.

Start the shift with coolant, not glass

Run the coolant loop and check every nozzle before the first sheet: a blocked nozzle starves one wheel for the whole shift, and a starved diamond wheel glazes over — the bond smears across the diamonds and the wheel stops cutting even though it looks fine. Thirty seconds of watching the spray pattern beats a resurfacing bill.

Feed the wheel work, not heat

A diamond wheel stays sharp by shedding worn grit and exposing fresh points, and that only happens under proper load. Feather-light feed rates polish the bond instead of working the diamonds, and the wheel dulls from underuse. Run the feed rate the settings card states — the machine was specified for it.

Dress at the first sign, not the tenth

When the edge starts showing shine marks or the spindle current creeps up, pass the dressing stick then — one light dress restores the surface. Waiting until the wheel visibly burnishes means a deep dress that spends diamond layer you paid for. Log dresses per wheel position; the log will show which spindle runs hot before your ear does.

Store wheels like the precision parts they are

Spare wheels live in their cases, bore-down on a clean shelf — not loose in a drawer where bond edges chip against each other. Mark each wheel’s spindle position and installation date on the case. When a wheel comes off mid-life for a profile change, note the remaining height; guessing wheel life from memory is how changeovers go wrong at midnight.
