A worm gear set is the only common industrial drive where the teeth mostly slide across each other rather than roll. That single fact drives everything else: the efficiency, the heat, the wear and the oil choice. Get the oil right and a worm drive will outlast the plant. Get it wrong and it will wear visibly within a couple of years.
Sliding, not rolling
In most gearboxes the teeth roll over each other, which naturally drags oil into the contact and keeps the metal surfaces apart. In a worm drive the surfaces slide across each other at speed, so the protective oil film has to be built by the oil’s own properties rather than by the motion of the gears. That puts far more demand on the oil than a normal gearbox ever does.
What the synthetic actually does
A synthetic gear oil gives a worm drive three things a standard mineral oil cannot:
- It stays thick when hot. The oil thins far less as it heats up, so the protective film holds at the high running temperatures a worm drive reaches by design.
- It creates less heat in the first place. The oil shears more easily in the contact, so a switch to synthetic typically makes a worm unit run noticeably cooler and slightly more efficient.
- It lasts much longer. Mineral oil ages rapidly once it runs hot. A synthetic tolerates temperatures that would ruin a mineral oil within a year.
What it does not do
It does not raise the torque rating — the gears are unchanged, and anyone quoting you extra capacity because of an oil change is selling you something. It does not fix a unit that was undersized for heat: a cooler-running oil buys useful margin, but it is not a bigger gearbox. And it will not undo existing wear — new oil slows the wear rate; it does not restore the tooth surface.
Practical notes on switching
- Drain the old oil hot, straight after running, so the wear debris comes out with the oil rather than settling in the housing.
- Drain thoroughly before refilling — old and new oils do not always mix well, and a flush is worth the hour it takes.
- Check the seals: some older units use seal materials chosen around mineral oil. Confirm compatibility before you assume.
- Expect the unit to run cooler and slightly quieter within the first shift. If it does not, the problem was never the oil.
- Re-label the unit. The next person to top it up will use whatever the plate says.
Our worm gear units ship filled with synthetic oil from the factory precisely because the argument is one-sided on gears that slide. On drive types where the teeth roll, a good mineral gear oil is still perfectly sound engineering.
