Built-in storage is genuinely the best use of an awkward wall. It is also the single least portable thing you can buy, and most people in small flats move every three to five years.
The number nobody quotes
A carpenter will fit an alcove wall for somewhere around 40 to 60 USD per hundred millimetres of width. A three-bay modular run covering the same 1880 mm costs 509 USD and comes apart in twenty minutes. The fitted version is better value on day one and worth nothing on the day you hand back the keys.
What modular actually buys you
- It moves. Flat again, in the original cartons, up the stairs of the next place.
- It grows. A fourth bay is one upright and three shelves, not a new unit.
- It changes job. The shelving that held books in the last flat holds folded clothes in this one — swap 300 mm shelves for 400 mm and keep the uprights.
Where built-in still wins
Under a staircase, around a boiler, or anywhere the wall is genuinely not square. Modular assumes right angles. If your wall does not have any, get somebody in with a scribe.
The compromise most people end up at
Fitted in the one spot that will never change — usually the alcove beside a chimney breast — and modular everywhere else. That is what we have in the studio, and it is what we would suggest.
