The most common misunderstanding in collaborative automation is that the robot alone makes an application safe. The boundary sits around the application, not the arm.
The application, not the robot, is assessed
A force-limited arm is one input into a workplace risk assessment; the part edges, the tooling, the speeds and the layout are the others. A rounded arm carrying a sharp sheet-metal blank is a different application from the same arm carrying foam — and the assessment treats them differently.
Speed is a design variable, not a loss
Collaborative stations often run slower in shared zones and faster when the operator steps away. Zone-based speed switching keeps the cycle honest without fencing the station — the layout drawing decides where those zones sit, and presence sensing enforces them.
Tooling deserves the same attention as the arm
Grippers with covered mechanisms, parts presented with edges shielded and screw stations with guarded bits carry the collaborative idea through to the process. A safe arm with hazardous tooling is a hazardous station.
Document the decisions while they are fresh
The risk assessment file is a working document: which hazards were identified, which measures answer them and what the residual instructions say. Cells that keep this file current commission faster on every later change, because the reasoning is already written down.
