What Acoustic Panel Ratings Really Tell You
A single rating number is a convenience, not a promise. Here is what the number on the box covers, what it quietly leaves out, and what to ask a supplier instead.
Almost every acoustic panel on the market leads with a single rating number on the front of the box. On its own, that number tells you surprisingly little about whether the product will fix your room.
What the rating actually measures
The common single-number ratings average how much sound a panel soaks up across the middle of the hearing range — roughly the frequencies of the human voice. That makes them useful for comparing panels meant to make speech clearer in an office or meeting room.
Notice what is missing: deep bass does not count towards the rating at all. A panel can carry an impressive score and still do essentially nothing for a boomy room, because boominess lives well below the range the rating covers.
Why the test conditions matter
Two suppliers can test the same kind of panel in different ways and publish very different numbers. A panel measured flat against a wall gives a modest, honest figure. The same panel measured hanging in open space gives a much more flattering one. Neither number is wrong — but they are only comparable if you know how each was measured.
What to ask instead
Ask three questions of any panel you are considering. Does it help with my actual problem — echo, harshness or boom? How was it tested? And who ran the test? A supplier who can answer all three without hesitating is a supplier whose numbers you can probably trust.
The short version
A single rating is a convenience, not a promise. For speech clarity, most well-made panels do the job. For bass problems, the rating on the box is close to meaningless — you need deeper products designed for the task, and ideally someone who has looked at your room.
