Most hydraulic failures are not dramatic. They are the slow arithmetic of dirty oil: particles a human eye cannot see, scoring surfaces a micrometre at a time. Four habits keep the arithmetic on your side.
Give the system a cleanliness target
“Clean oil” is not a number; ISO 4406 codes are. Servo and proportional circuits generally want cleaner oil than gear-pump circuits, and the component data sheets name their expectations. Write the target into the maintenance plan — a system with a stated code gets sampled; a system without one gets guessed at.
Sample on schedule, not on suspicion
Oil sampling belongs on the calendar the way electrical inspection does. A sample drawn from a live circuit at operating temperature, from the same point each time, turns cleanliness into a trend line. The trend is the early warning: a code creeping upward flags a wearing pump or a failed breather months before either announces itself.
Respect the filter indicator
A clogging indicator in the red is not a suggestion. A bypassing filter protects nothing while everything looks normal from the outside. Stock elements ahead of season, change them on indication, and record the change date — element life is itself a diagnostic trend.
Mind how oil enters the tank
New oil is not clean oil; drums collect condensation and particles in storage. Filling through a transfer filter cart costs minutes and keeps the reservoir inside its target. The same cart doubles as an offline kidney loop during maintenance windows — cheap insurance measured against a pump rebuild.
