A hydraulic hose is a wear item with a schedule of its own. Inspection is quick, and the alternative — an unplanned burst under pressure — is neither quick nor safe. Here is a practical routine.
Walk the lines with the system off
Look for cover abrasion that exposes reinforcement wire, blisters or soft spots, kinks from tight routing, and corrosion or cracking at the crimped ends. Any exposed wire braid or fitting movement is a replacement, not a watch item. Check clamps and guides too — most cover damage starts where a hose rubs.
Never search for leaks by hand
Fluid escaping a pinhole under pressure can penetrate skin, and an injection injury is a surgical emergency that does not look like one at first. Search for suspected leaks with a piece of cardboard and gloves, with pressure relieved wherever the work allows. Treat any suspected injection injury as urgent and say what caused it.
Route replacements the way the old hose wished it was routed
A hose that failed early usually failed for a reason: bend radius too tight, torsion from a misaligned fitting, rubbing on a bracket, or heat from a nearby surface. Replacement is the moment to fix the routing — add an elbow adapter, a clamp or a protective sleeve, and the next hose lives a longer life.
Record age, not just condition
Hose assemblies age in service and in storage. Mark installation dates, keep the build codes from the sleeve markings, and plan replacement by both condition and age. Fleet operators who log hoses replace them on quiet days; those who do not, replace them at midnight during harvest of some kind.
