Relief and compensator settings decide whether a hydraulic system runs sweet or runs hot. The procedure is not difficult, but the order of operations matters. This is the calm version.
Start from the documentation, not the dial
The circuit diagram names the intended settings: system relief, pump compensator, secondary reliefs, sequence valves. Collect the numbers before touching anything, and confirm which gauge point reads each one. Adjusting the wrong cartridge confidently is the classic first-timer mistake.
Set pressure against a real load path
Pressure settings need resistance to push against. Use the machine’s own dead-head condition or a test-point gauge with the function stalled per the manual. Bring settings up from below the target, in small steps, watching the gauge — never down from above, and never in one heroic turn.
Order matters: relief before compensator
On pressure-compensated systems the relief valve backs up the compensator, typically set a margin above it. Set the relief first at its documented value, then bring the compensator to its setpoint below. If the two are set in the wrong order or too close together, the system oscillates between them and cooks the oil.
Lock, label and log
When a setting is right, tighten the locknut, note the value and date, and — where fittings allow — record the gauge reading at a named test point. The next technician inherits a system with known numbers instead of a mystery. Settings that drift from the log are themselves the diagnostic.
