The forming fabric is the most inspected and least understood wear item on a paper machine. A short daily routine keeps it draining evenly for its full design life.
Walk the fabric at the same point every shift
Pick one spot with good light on the return run and look at the same area every shift: sheet marks, filled areas and edge wear announce themselves days before they become breaks. A phone photo against yesterday’s photo answers “is this getting worse” better than memory ever will.
Keep showers honest
A plugged shower nozzle leaves a dirty stripe that dewaters differently, and the sheet remembers it all the way to the reel. Check oscillation travel and nozzle pattern on a fixed schedule, and treat a single blocked nozzle as a now-job, not a note for the next stop.
Watch vacuum as a profile, not a number
Rising vacuum at constant conditions means the fabric is filling; falling dryness after the couch means it is wearing smooth. Trend both by position, because averages hide the stripe that matters. Ceramic edges with a polished radius are what the fabric wants to slide on — a chipped segment costs more fabric than it costs ceramic.
Handle stops properly
On every stop, wash the fabric before it dries: stock dried into the weave never fully leaves. For longer stops, slack the tension per the maker’s sheet and keep the machine turning on crawl if the schedule allows — a fabric parked under full tension in one position takes a set that shows in the sheet at restart.
