Break rate is the runnability number everyone feels. Before changing settings, read what the machine is already telling you — breaks leave evidence.
Where the tail goes matters
A break that always starts at the same cross position points to a local cause: a dirty shower stripe, a chipped foil edge, a filled fabric lane or a nicked doctor blade. A break that wanders across positions points to stock or wet-end chemistry. Sort local from global first — they have different owners.
Match the break clock against the process clock
Breaks that cluster after grade changes point at transition recipes; breaks on a shift pattern point at manual settings drifting between crews; breaks that follow the broke ratio point at stock quality eating its own tail. The time stamp is diagnostic data, not paperwork.
Look at the edges before the middle
Most machine-caused breaks start at an edge: trim squirt alignment, edge cracking from over-dry edges, or a guide palm polishing the fabric edge. Edge condition is checkable in minutes at the dry end and repays the walk more often than any parameter screen.
Change one thing, then wait a shift
Runnability suffers most from stacked corrections: three simultaneous changes and nobody knows which one worked. Make the single most likely correction, run a full shift, and log the result against the break record — the discipline feels slow and is the fastest route to a stable machine.
