Consistency is the quiet variable of papermaking: a fraction of a percent moves basis weight, refining energy and retention all at once. Controlling it well is mostly about respecting the measurement.
Sample where the process is honest
A consistency transmitter after a pump sees well-mixed stock; one on a slow horizontal run sees stratified fibre and reports fiction. When a reading disagrees with the lab, check the installation point before the calibration — geometry lies more often than electronics.
Calibrate against the lab, on a schedule
Manual samples pulled at the transmitter, weighed dry in the lab, and logged against the online reading: that loop is the whole integrity of the control. Drift found on a schedule is maintenance; drift found through a basis weight complaint is a customer conversation.
Tune dilution valves for the machine, not the loop check
A dilution valve that hunts puts a consistency wave straight into the headbox. Slower, well-damped loops beat fast nervous ones — the paper machine itself is the lowpass filter that punishes overshoot. Watch valve travel history: a valve living near closed or wide open has a sizing problem no tuning will fix.
Trend consistency with its consequences
Put consistency on the same trend screen as basis weight valve position and refiner load. When all three move together, the story is upstream in the stock line; when consistency alone moves, suspect the measurement. The trends turn arguments between shifts into a diagnosis.
