Every piece begins as rough pulled from the Uru river valley. Scroll to follow one stone from the seam to the wrist.

The seam

Rough is cut open with a single window. What the light does inside that window decides everything that follows.

A carver reads the grain for days before the first pass. Water keeps the stone cool; the sound tells him when to stop.

Eleven grades of grit, by hand. The surface stops being glass and starts being skin.

Jadeite warms to body temperature in about four minutes, and stays there. That is the part no photograph carries.
