Half Your Edge-Quality Complaints Are Really Gas Invoices

Most edge-quality complaints are parameter conversations that never happened. Power, speed, gas and focus are one setting, not four — change one and the others move with it.

Start from the parameter table, not from memory

Every machine ships with parameter tables proven on acceptance material. Start jobs from the table entry for the material and gauge, and treat operator tweaks as experiments to be written back, not folklore to be remembered. A parameter that lives only in one operator’s head leaves with the shift.

Gas choice is an economic decision

Oxygen, nitrogen and shop air each buy a different combination of edge finish, oxide layer and running cost. Parts headed for powder coating or welding often justify nitrogen’s cleaner edge; parts headed for a hidden bracket may not. Decide per part family, then lock the choice into the program.

Focus position drifts — check it on schedule

A focus check takes minutes and catches the slow drift that optics contamination and thermal lensing introduce. If edge quality changes mid-shift with no parameter change, check the protective window before touching the table values.

Write changes back the same day

When a new material batch needs an adjusted feed, update the stored program and note the batch. The next operator inherits a working setting instead of rediscovering the problem at full sheet cost.
