Tall furniture fails at the joints before it fails anywhere else, because every time somebody leans back the rail tries to lever itself out of the leg. The No.4 has two full rings of rails — one under the seat and one low down as a footrest — and every one of the sixteen joints is drawn tight with its own peg.
The footrest ring is deliberately set at 150 mm so it takes the weight of a foot rather than a heel, which is what wears the front edge off most stools.
