The spine

Two waxed cotton cords run through punched channels rather than elastic. Cords do not perish, and when they eventually fray you can replace them with a bootlace.

The tie

A 2 mm leather thong long enough to wrap twice and still hold a pen flat against the front cover. It is the only closure that never breaks.

Fits

Two standard 21 × 13 cm notebooks, or one plus a sheaf of loose paper.
