What it is

A 48 gsm polyamide ripstop shell. Its job is wind. A layer this light cuts the wind chill that turns a comfortable 8°C into an uncomfortable one, and it does it while weighing almost nothing in a pocket. The ripstop grid is visible in the weave and is there to stop a small snag turning into a tear.

What it is not

It is not a rain jacket. The fabric carries a water-repellent finish that beads off drizzle for a while, and in sustained rain it will wet through. We would rather say that here than have you find out on a hill. [Client to confirm the exact finish chemistry and whether any PFC-free claim can be made before that wording goes on the site.]

Construction

Full-length front zip with a chin guard so the slider does not sit against your throat. Cuffs are elasticated rather than adjustable, which is one less thing to fiddle with in gloves. The hem drops at the back. There is a reflective trim across the shoulders. It packs into its own chest pocket, which turns inside out and zips shut.

Care

Cold wash and a low tumble dry. The heat is what re-activates a water-repellent finish, so a shell that has stopped beading is usually one that has only ever been hung to dry.
