Most cold chain failures are designed in at the scoping stage and discovered in production. This is the sequence we run before quoting a new lane.
1. Cargo profile
Not just the label band. We need the stability data: how long the product tolerates being at the edge of its band, whether it has a freeze sensitivity, and whether excursions are cumulative. A product that tolerates a two-hour excursion once is not the same as one that tolerates it weekly.
2. Zone selection
The zone selector on the home page is a simplified version of this step. In practice we pick the band, then check that it is achievable at every handover on the proposed route, including the ones the customer does not control.
3. Route and dwell mapping
Every stop, every transfer, every possible delay. We build the worst-case timeline first and design against that, not against the happy path.
4. Packaging qualification
For passive lanes, the shipper profile is qualified against the worst-case timeline in summer and winter ambient. If the qualified hold time does not exceed the worst-case timeline by a clear margin, the packaging changes.
5. First ninety days
New lanes run with tightened logging intervals and a formal review at day thirty, sixty and ninety. Roughly a third of new lanes get a design change out of that review. That is the point of it.
What we need from you
- Product stability data, or at minimum the labelled storage condition and any freeze sensitivity.
- Realistic volumes and seasonality — a lane designed for average volume fails at peak.
- Receiving-point conditions, including whether the delivery bay is sealed and staffed.
- Who signs for the record at the far end.
