LiDAR Terrain Modelling Under Canopy

A camera cannot map what it cannot see, and over woodland it only sees the canopy. A laser scanner works differently: each pulse can pass through gaps in the foliage, and enough of them reach the ground to build a reliable model of the terrain beneath the trees.

We fly the scanner low with generous overlap, so that even under moderate tree cover there are genuine ground measurements on every part of the site.

Classification is the deliverable

Raw laser returns are not a terrain model. The point cloud is sorted into ground, vegetation and structures, then checked by hand along ditches, banks and road edges — exactly the features automated filters tend to miss and drainage designs depend on.

Honest limits

Under very dense evergreen cover, far fewer pulses reach the ground and accuracy drops with them. We report how well the ground was actually measured across the site, so you can see where the surface is solid and where it is estimated.
